Josef Hoffmann ( Austrian 15 December 1870 – 7 May 1956) was a pupil of Otto Wagner and eminent architect and designer. He was among the founders of the Viennese Secession and of the Wiener Werkstätte. His philosophy of integrity of the arts, to create a “Gesamtkunstwerk” (the total work of art), which he consistently applied not only to large architectural and interior design projects, but also to fashion, furniture, tableware, or jewelry. His name is forever synonymous with Art Deco and peak of Vienna Secession architecture.
